Many people who know about this camera think it is just a Fuji version of the very popular Nikon D200 – with a seriously hiked-up price tag! This is absolutely untrue. The Fuji S5 Digital Camera is its own individual.
So okay, yes it is based on the D200. Actually we can be more accurate than that. After all, there have been previous cameras that were touted as being “based on” a Nikon model, but if you bought one you would find major compatibility issues. To be clear: this camera actually uses the D200 body; and you can use virtually ALL the stndard Nikor-type accessories with this camera that you would with the D200 – flash units, lenses etc. (Are there exceptions? Of course there are. But there are very few, and the user manual spells out which accessories are to be avoided. It’s a pretty small list – but one oddball is that you mustn’t use the D200 batteries, while you CAN use the battery grip with the right batteries.)
Some experts place the S5 as just short of the Canon 5D when it comes to resolution, while slower-shooting than the Nikon 200 but besting it in image quality. When comparing the quality of images between the D200 and Fujifilm S5, we have to say that the RAW images are really amazing. And even the JPEG images are very, very good even with zero ‘tweaking’ on the computer. And by the way, when I say ‘quality’ think COLOR. The colors are just wonderful… use whatever adjective you can think of: vivid, breathtaking, rich, true, lifelike…
Early versions of the camera firmware (below v1.06) did not perform Automatic White Balance very well. Reviewers that were pointedly complaining about this have pretty much universally agreed that the later firmware has completely fixed this issue. Hard-core button-fiddlers find they just keep it at the auto setting and don’t feel the need to mess with it.
This camera also performs quite well in low-light situations at high ISO up to 2000. Compare this with what you would get with a D200 any time you go much higher than ISO 400! Very little noise… and even in those settings where a certain level of noise is unavoidable (or even desirable for effect) there is a nice even ‘grain’ that evokes the graininess of film in such environment.
Keep in mind what this lovely quality costs – and no I’m not talking about purchase price! The files are big. The RAW files on the highest quality setting are HUGE. I guess for those people who complain this camera doesn’t shoot as fast as the Nikon, maybe they can understand why considering the gazillion bytes of data that have to be generated and pushed through the buffer to provide the higher image quality.
I suppose this should go without saying, but I’ll say it anyway: since the camera is capturing very intense detail and dynamic spectral ranges, it is not at all forgiving of poor quality lenses (or, for that matter, poor quality photography… if you are the least bit shaky do us all a favor and use a TRIPOD.) ‘Nuff said.
How would I sum up white I’ve heard from professionals about this camera? Here it is in a few sentences. If the focus of your art or business is on photographing PEOPLE (weddings and the like) then the Fuji S5 is a fantastic choice – and yes worth the extra dollars. People literally rave about how skin tones (especially, but not only, Caucasion skin) come out in all kinds of lighting and surroundings. Shoot mostly outdoor scenes, landscapes and such? Well obviously still a great camera, but maybe you would do just as well with something a tad less expensive. Shoot a lot of action or sporting events? You may want to stick with something like the Nikon D200 or one of its siblings, which excel in ‘machine gunning’ while shooting high speed events (but if you can afford it, go ahead and have that Fuji S5 Camera as the second camera you pull out of your bag when the action is over, and you need to see the laughter & tears backstage!)
